When I think of Alan Rickman, the first three roles I think of are Severus Snape ("Ob-viouslay"), Alexander Dane (Dr. Lazarus) from Galaxy Quest, and Colonel Brandon from Sense and Sensibility.

Snape is a no brainer, the man was Snape. J.K. Rowling revealed to him everything he needed to know about the character, from the very beginning, and I'd wager he took with him knowledge about Severus, that only He and She know.

Galaxy Quest is one of my Favorite movies, and there 's so much to like about him in that film. The way he despises that's what his life is defined by, but having the heart to deliver his hated Catch Phrase in his biggest fan's moment of demise. It's a wonderful film.

And My wife has exposed me to more Period Piece, Comedies of Manners, since I got married than I ever thought possible. And the moment I heard on the radio, that Alan Rickman was no longer with us, that giant, ridiculous hat he wears as Colonel Bradley popped into my head, even before the Snape memories.

Those are the big three in my head, I know he was in Die Hard, but I haven't watched that much, it being R-rated, I've only caught the edited for T.V. version a couple times. He was great as the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. And never forget The Sheriff of Nottingham - I would probably watch that one more often if I had a newer copy. My DVD is so old that it's single layered, and you have to flip the disc over like a neanderthal, in the middle of the film. And there's that forgotten gem, Quigley down Under.
